Immigration - FACT! 700,000 people have settled in the UK as a result of the expansion of the EU. The government predicted around 13,000 migrants a year, as opposed to 60,000 in the last quarter alone.
The UK has always been a generous host and has welcomed people fleeing tyranny and oppression, as well as those seeking a better way of life (my own ancestors included). But our generosity has to have a limit. With the privilege of citizenship should come responsibilities, including looking for work and contributing to society. I also expect settlers to support the values of British society, including tolerance and freedom.
I believe...
- Immigration has helped this country but unlimited immigration is a burden we cannot afford if we are to ensure the integrity of our public services. We need to set quotas based on the needs of employers so economic migration can be greatly reduced and our public services can be maintained.
- We need a dedicated border police force, in a recognisable uniform to target illegal entry and cut people trafficking.
- We need greater efficiency in processing claims for asylum and better monitoring of visitors. Rejected applicants should be deported quickly, not lost in the system never to be found again.
- Settlers should take lessons in English language and should make efforts to integrate into the British ways of life.
