"The moment a burglar steps over your threshold, and invades your property, with all the threat that gives to you, your family and your livelihood, I think they leave their human rights outside." - David Cameron
I think this is the view of most sane and sensible people, yet under the current government, it seems victims come a very poor second to criminals. Sentencing seems to always take account of the social background of the vile
people who burgle and rob hard working people, many of whom actually can't afford the high premiums insurers charge. A slap on the wrist seems to be the preferable penalty for those who are caught - while those that do go to prison are released early under Labour's early release scheme. These days, the human rights of the law breaker seem to take priority over those ehose privacy is violated.
If elected, the Conservatives will take a tougher approach to crime. Yes, we will seek to rehabilitate criminals and we will help cure those whose addictions cause them to take this route in the first place. But the balance has to be re-set. It's time to remember what is right and what is wrong. And in my view, that means being on the side of the victim.
Labour MPs have just voted themselves another 12 days away from the Chamber. And yes, it was only Labour MPs who voted for it (see here), including our own Eltham MP. Conservatives and Liberal Democrats voted against it - preferring to hold the government to account and try to restore some trust in our broken political system.
At a time when we're still mired in recession and unemployment has climbed yet again in London, can they really justify another 12 days away from Parliament?
In a Parliamentary debate, MPs called for restrictions on free local newspapers produced by local authorities at
taxpayers' expense. Greenwich Council distributes Greenwich Time, at a cost of over half a million pounds to local residents, and even claims it is an award winning publication - which is probably would be in any propaganda competition. It is said that all content is 'checked' by the Council Leader Chris Roberts and it is virtually unheard of for anyone but Labour politicians to feature in print. So I was delighted that the government is to refer the matter to independent investigation. For too long this rag has been used to propagate Labour political spin while commercially run newspapers and magazines such as SE9, are struggling with falling advertising revenues and readership. I am pleased that the Conservative Shadow Minister Caroline Spelman indicated her concern before Christmas on just this point. I look forward to the end of this one sided insult to journalism and saving local taxpayers a significant sum of cash.
See the report in Newsshopper here
Sky News is reporting that 'celebrity mum' Myleene Klass was warned she could have committed a crime after she scared off intruders at her home when she waved a knife at them. She said she saw the intruders when they peered through her window when she was in her kitchen, with her daughter upstairs. She grabbed a knife and banged on the window before they ran away. Apparently, police told her it is illegal to carry an offensive weapon,
even in her own home. What utter tosh.
Firstly, I believe she did absolutely the right thing. No doubt she acted spontaneously and her immediate concern was to protect herself and her child. Secondly, in my view, if anyone chooses to intrude into private property they risk the occupant taking appropriate action to defend it and the people on site. I very much doubt that, even if there had been a full scale break-in, she would have used the knife. Thirdly, I would have had little sympathy with the intruders if she had.
We have got to start getting a grip on law and order. People need to take responsibility for their actions. That means that if they choose to break the law by breaking into a person's home, whether the intention is to steal to fund a drug habit or to attack an occupant, they should not be surprised if they end up being harmed. In my view, the criminal is the person who invades private property, not the person enjoying the place they call home. Let's put a stop to this stupid nonsense.
Just to prove Conservatives really do work all year round, no matter what the weather, here's a photo of some of us as we set out to deliver newsletters across Kidbrooke with Hornfair this morning. Special thanks to Councillor Graeme Coombes who also found time to update
me on the appalling saga of the Lido, which has been an utter disgrace.
It has been closed throughout the Summer despite no work having taken place. As a result, it is likely to be closed for at least a second season, meaning thousands of residents are denied access to what has always been a popular leisure facility. Graeme and his fellow Conservative councillor Andy Jennings have asked plenty of questions of Greenwich Council, but received very little explanation or justification for the situation. I support their campaign to get a swift resolution to this debacle as soon as possible, and look forward to the Lido being open to Greenwich residents once again.
UPDATE: Sunday morning, further snow but the ice is thawing a little. Another 500 leaflets delivered in Eltham. And a few snow men in front gardens - this one was my favourite.
On their recent visits to Eltham, both the Shadow Home Secretary and Shadow Immigration Minister promised that a Conservative government would tighten border controls and limit immigration to the UK. Conservative proposals would include a massive reform of the visa system that has, up to now, allowed so many bogus students to enter the UK.
The measures include:
The Shadow Home Secretary has made the following statement:
"The student visa system is a huge loophole in our border controls, and despite years of promises the Government has completely failed to deal with the problem. This loophole has not only allowed large numbers of people to enter the country who would not have been able to do so otherwise, but is now a genuine security risk for us. In the current climate we cannot possibly go on like this. Our proposals will transform the system, making it much more difficult for those who want to abuse it, whilst encouraging genuine students to come to our colleges and universities."
I support these measures and others that have already been announced to stop the open door policy operating under the current government. We cannot go on like this. Under the Conservatives, we will not.
UPDATE: On Sunday, David Cameron pledged to cut immigration to the UK from 100,000s to 10,000s. I am sure this announcement will be welcomed by residents across the Eltham constituency - and the rest of the country.
The Government has, today, ordered local authorities to reduce their salt gritting of roads by 25% until Tuesday - despite the fact we are expecting further heavy snow to fall over the weekend.![]()
This is a total disgrace and proves the government had not prepared adequately for the serious outbreak of bad weather. For once, we were warned that this weather was coming - so why were better preparations not made in time? The whole country is coming to a halt despite the best efforts of individuals and organisations that are doing their best to maintain our daily life. Coming on top of the longest and deepest recession in living memory, this could spell the final blow for thousands of small businesses and shops.
UPDATE: Sunday 10 January (from BBC News)
"The Highways Agency has stopped treating motorway hard shoulders in England. Salt ordered from abroad is not due to arrive until 21 January.
But the agency's David Grunwell said the motorway and trunk road network was "running remarkably well" and that it had sufficient stocks for the conditions.
The AA said it raised concerns about salt supplies with the Local Government Association (LGA) before Christmas.
Spokesman Paul Watters told the BBC councils had reduced stocks by 250,000 tonnes during the past 10 years."
I rest my case.
It's certainly been a cold start to the new decade but what has struck me is that for all those who will find any
excuse to get an extra day off work, plenty more deserve medals for their determination - and their kindness. Many people have checked on neighbours, even helping them to clear the pavements outside their homes. Many more have discovered the joy of sharing taxis from railway stations and car sharing to get to work. But I think the thousands of people who work in essential services deserve most praise for keeping the country going. Despite the disruption in most parts of the UK, here in London trains, buses and taxis are still running, mail and newspapers are being delivered, shops still have food, GP surgeries and hospitals remain open, and most businesses remain open. Yes, most services are disrupted or reduced, but the general mood is "Keep calm and carry on" - which is how it should be.
However, once this long cold spell is over, I hope the authorities from Greenwich Council upwards will review their procedures. Too many residents have felt cut off, not only in higher areas such as Shooters Hill but even close to the High Street in Eltham where I live. The lack of gritting on pavements in high use areas has been appalling and many roads remain dangerous. Do we have sufficient stocks of grit and salt, should householders be better prepared to muck in? It never hurts to admit things can be done better and to learn from experience.
