Gurkhas deserve better

I was elated to see the Commons defeat Gordon Brown's ridiculous and unfair plans to deny Gurkhas the right to live in this country after putting their lives on the line in our defence.  I am told that even Cabinet members were ashamed of the plan, which shows just how out of touch the Prime Minister is.

I firmly believe we need to limit immigration, and we need to put a cap on the number of people allowed to settle here.  But it seems entirely wrong to deny people who have given something to this country when so many who have contrinbuted nothing - and probably never will - are allowed to come in freely and claim benefits, use the human rights legislation to remain and then enjoy our public services for nothing.  What a rotten system.  What a good day for parliamentary democracy, at last.

Victory!

The battle of Eltham Green has been won!  I had a text message before 8am this morning to say that the Council have ordered the huge ditch dug across the ancient open space to be filled in and returned to its former glory.  My warmest congratulations to all those residents who stood with their placards and spoke to bus passengers and passers by since this stupid fiasco started.

Questions remain - why was this allowed to happen in the first place, who ordered it, why was the community not consulted (even notified) ot the plan and who was wasting money on such a project when we are told there is not the money to repair pavements across Eltham?  I shall watch with close interest to see whether or not the Green is returned to its original state and would be interested to know who will foot the bill for this complete waste of time.

Swine Flu

You may be aware that I work in a school and so it was pertinent that yesterday, we sent home to every parent a letter explaining the precautions we had taken in readiness for a possible flu pandemic.

I am sure people in this country are now pretty hardened to these health scares.

It is worth noting that the government has stocks of medicine to treat this outbreak for up to half the population.  Basic hygiene and cleanliness should help to reduce the risk of the virus spreading.  The most essential advice is that if you believe you may have flu-like symptoms, do NOT go to the surgery.  Call your doctor or NHS Direct, and ask for their advice.  Going out and mixing with people could help to spread the virus.  Most importantly, don't panic.  It really does seem that the NHS is geared up for this outbreak and sufficient supplies of medication have been stored.

Back from Cheltenham

After meeting so many residents on Saturday I had to make a quick dash to Cheltenham for the Conservative Spring Conference.  I was just in time for a dinner with Boris Johnson where he announced the arrival of the first new Routemaster buses will be this Summer.  Another election pledge delivered!

On Sunday I saw George Osborne and David Cameron set out some of their plans to take this country through the age of austerity what will be needed if we are ever to recover from the horrendous economic misery we are currently experiencing.  Sobering stuff, but rightly there will be an end to profligate spending by central government, ministers who spend more and deliver fewer or worse services will be sacked and the expensive ID cards system Labour have dreamt up will be abolished.  It can't come soon enough.

Listening to Coldharbour & New Eltham

I was joined by the Shadow Minister for Communities, Stewart Jackson MP this Saturday as I visited hundreds of homes in Coldharbour & New Eltham with local councillors.  It was interesting to see that despite not meeting anyone owning up to being paid over £100,000 just about everyone agreed the Budget delivered by Mr Darling was a wasted opportunity and a return to the bad old days of Labour mismanagement.

I am pleased to announce that local residents have another opportunity to meet me and their local ward councillors on Thursday 7 May from 6.30-8.30pm at our special Neighbourhood Evening.  It will be held at St Albans Church, William Barefoot Drive and the local police will attend, so it's a chance to feed back to them also.

No need to book in advance, just turn up and have a cup of tea.  We'd love to see you.

Eltham Green fiasco

I have received several calls and emails from residents who were bemused, then angry, to see a huge path being built across Eltham Green.  It seems that someone, without any consultation with local residents, decided the ancient green open space needed a Tarmac path driven through it. Unsurprisingly, nobody wants to take responsibility and rumours abound that it's being done in a hurry to use up an underspend at the end of the financial year.  It begs lots of questions, but not least why any spare cash couldn't be used to repair the terrible pavements in that part of Eltham.  At least that would have been welcomed and worthwhile.  But that's probably too sensible for the people responsible for spending your money.  And this when the country is so deep in debt we're borrowing trillions.  Only in Greenwich.

Celebrating St George's Day in style

I have just returned from a  truly wonderful St George's Day supper in Welling, courtesy of Bexleyheath & Crayford Conservatives.  Henry Bellingham MP, the Shadow Justice Minister gave a rousing speech and reminded us of why we should be proud to be English.  I very much hope that as a nation, in future, we might celebrate St George's Day more widely and with greater gusto.  In this regard, the Irish, Scots and Welsh could certainly teach us a thing or two.

Too many messages like this...

"Do you know, yesterday brought on such a sadness in me. For the first time that I can remember, I started really wondering, 'is there any reason to be in this country anymore?'. I feel that angry/depressed/upset with their dogged determination to disincentivise anyone to do anything"...and there will be a genuine drain on talent in this country.  This is a direct quote from a very good friend who gets paid well for what they do but works very hard.  They may or may not be in the new 50p tax band, I don't know and would never ask, but it is a common complaint about this government.  Whether rich or poor, everyone will pay more as a result of yesterday's Budget. Perhaps if Mr Brown really believes it was such a good Budget, he should put it to the ultimate test and call an election.

Happy St George's Day

I am delighted that going through Eltham today there were quite a few places flying the England flags and bunting, proving that it's not only Boris who is celebrating St George's Day today.  It's time to reclaim our national day and take pride in our heritage.  And in these particularly gloomy days, we all need an excuse for a celebration.  So, have a good St George's Day and belt out Jerusalem to your heart's content!

Budget for a Bust Britain

As usual, I would strongly recommend people take their time looking at the detail of the Budget that has just been delivered in the House of Commons.  The wildly optimistic forecasts, like all those that Mr Darling has previously relied on, show how out of touch he and the Prime Minister really are with real life.

The obvious effort to 'trap' the opposition parties, playing petty political games at a time of national economic crisis, says all that needs saying about the morally and economically bancrupt government.  But what is very obvious is just how bad the finances are, how long it will take every single one of us to pay the massive debts off, and how little joy the future holds for anyone who relies on a car, pays rent or is suffering with negative equity, runs their own company, or lives to a pensionable age.  Quite simply, the country is on its knees - and it may be over a year before the current lot can be dragged away from the levers of power.
