When I heard British Gas has increased prices by a record
35% it took my breath away. But even more so when I realised that rise was with immediate effect.
Such a move gives customers absolutely no time to consider changing supplier or working out what they need to do to sort their finances. It is disgraceful. Utility companies should have to give due notice of rises in prices and unbiased advice on how to compare tariffs. I don't care how much their profits have plunged, that is a shameful way to treat customers.
I have received the following request from the Friends of Avery Hill Park and publish it in a bid to help resolve a nasty incident:
On Monday evening at about 8:45pm, in the area of Halfway street and Days Lane, Sidcup, there was a dog attack by a brindle coloured staff type dog on another dog.
The owner is trying to trace the owner of the staffy, as they assured the injured dogs owners she would go to her house to make sure the dog was ok. This did not happen. The attack was vicious and unprovoked. The staff was off the lead. It caused serious injuries to the other dog.
If you are a local to the Halfway street / Days Lane and specifically the alleyway by the Co-op through to Merrillees Avenue and think you might know of a lady in her 30's with dark tied back hair who owns a brindle coloured type staff, the injured dogs owner would be grateful to hear from you via the Friends of Avery Hill Park email address.
Any information will be treated with the strictest of confidence.
This dog has also been seen with youths hanging around the kebab shop area on the parade of Halfway street shops. The youths and the lady are thought to be related. This staff appears to be vicious towards any other dog.
The matter has been logged with the Police SNT to deal.
Thank you for any help you may be able to give.
GMTV has long championed the consumer so I was hardly surprised that yesterday morning their money saving wizard, Martin Lewis, was banging on about capping our utility prices. He got rather passionate about it. So much so it was like having a ranting psycho in my living room while I ate my
cereal. I saw his point - change energy suppliers, cap the prices and avoid another 20% or more price hike later in the year. But I then forgot about it and went to work.
This morning he was on again. So successful was his rant yesterday that some energy suppliers had already removed the capping option and others may follow in days. I went straight upstairs and checked my EDF tariff (up 20% last week) on Energyhelpline.com - and discovered I could save over £100 a year on combined gas and electriticy prices and cap the tariff until October 2009 by switching. That means avoiding further increases which may come later this year.
If you are feeling the harsh reality of rising fuel bills, don't delay - cap your tariff today. It may be a very cold winter.
I don't watch Countdown much - though I recall often watching it as a student. But I was saddened to learn that Carol
Vorderman has left the show, especially as it seems her departure has been anything but happy.
She had been a part of that programme since it started, and was, as far as I was concerned, one of the major attractions. Her legendary brainpower was inspirational and made maths seem sexy.
The show's producers think the show will survive as it did after the sudden death of poor Richard Whiteley. We will see. Change is often necessary, but it is nice to know some things remain constant in life. Sadly, even Countdown cannot be relied upon any longer.
Taking advantage of the beautiful weather, I knocked on the doors of residents in Shooters Hill. I was surprised to find so many at home, but of course quite a number were relieved to be given a break from mowing their lawns!
There was little surprise to me that the overriding concern is household income and expenditure. The cash coming in just isn't keeping up with the massive increases in food, fuel and mortgage prices. People generally understand there's a global issue but expect the government to have been prepared for the inevitable downturn.
In the afternoon I was in New Eltham, attending a Sumemr Fete and hog roast. I'll confess, I ate far too much. I was told the organisers had started the roast at 4.30am (we arrived just before 1pm) but they seemed to cope remarkably well with the heat. It was a treat to see families enjoying themselves and putting the challenges of the day to one side for a few hours.
The Labour Party lost another by-election yesterday, this time in Scotland their strongest base. This despite flooding the area with more than 400
activists the previous day.
David Cameron has called on the Prime Minister to seek an election. I support this call. Why? Violent crime, rising fuel bills, rising food prices, rising unemployment, falling house values, less money in the family pot - it is all causing very real misery. It is clear that people want to have a change in government. It is time to give people a chance to choose who they want running their country. The time has come to call an election.
Last night I spent a couple of hours with a group of local residents who have formed an action group called the Cliftons Roundabout Action Group (CRAG). They oppose the proposed development of the site once occupied by the World of Leather store, currently home to Shapes Gym (a family run
business which has been there for over 2 decades), and a number of other retail outlets. The story has been reported in the Newsshopper.
The Big Yellow storage company would like to demolish the existing buildings and erect a huge yellow warehouse. I believe such a development would be inappropriate for this site which is actually a long established residential area. As well as being twice the height of the current parade (with the exception of Shapes gym, the buildings are only single storey) there would be the loss of valuable local retailers and services. There would also be a massive loss of employment - 33 people have jobs on this site. A typical Big Yellow of this size employs only 2 or 3 people.
And where would the 300+ members of Shapes Gym go? Greenwich Council makes much of us being an Olympic borough and says we need to address obesity. Let them put their words into action by refusing this application. Hundreds of residents and customers are fighting this application. They have my full support and if you would like to add your weight to the campaign please email your details to me at David@DavidGold4Eltham.com so I can pass on to the campaign committee.
Last weekend I was talking to residents in Shooters Hill ward when I met a gentleman who has been unemployed for a few months and is very anxious because his mortgage is in danger of going into arrears and he has other commitments like utilities and an overdraft. Because his wife works and
earns a modest income, the benefits agency told him he did not qualify for much by way of help and it would be months before he would receive any help with his mortgage - by which time, in the current climate, he could well have lost his home.
The advice from the benefits officer was to get his wife to reduce her hours (working only weekends) so that he would receive more help. What kind of system makes a man who has worked hard and tries to do the right thing and who is obviously keen to work tell his wife they would be better off if she also lost her job? This case proves that the benefits system exists to make people reliant on state handouts and discourages people from standing on their own 2 feet.
As an aside, he told me his son has not had a job in the 3 years since leaving college and receives help with everything. Case closed.
Some time ago the Conservatives set out clear policies on how we would reform the welfare system. Too many people are classified as 'incapable' of working when in reality many could do certain ty
pes of work but not all types of work. In effect, the current system makes people welfare dependent.
There are many more who simply do not want to work and instead manipulate the system to ensure they never have to find employment. Such people set a bad example to their children who grow up strangers to the notion of getting ready to go and earn the money which houses and clothes them.
It is a welcome sign that after a decade in power the Labour government has admitted it has failed to tackle the problem and has taken the Conservative proposals and made them policy.
We are told crime is falling, yet my survey of 10,000 residents in the Eltham constituency shows many simply don't bother reporting crime as they believe it's a waste of time. This suggests the official figures cannot be relied upon.
Violent crimes are officially on the increase, despite what the Home Secretary claimed recently. There is a knife crime every 4 minutes of every day.
21 London teenagers have died in stabbings already this year - and now I hear that 2 Croydon police officers are on sick leave after being attacked by a mob of up to 30 youngsters after asking a 15 year old girl to pick up litter she had thrown on the ground.
It's not just the fact people have lost faith in the crime statistics. There seems to have been a total break down in society which is causing people - young as well as old - to live in fear. That is unacceptable. I don't care how crowded the prisons, or what excuses people use to justify carrying knives. There should be an automatic assumption that people do not need to carry a knife in public places. And being caught with one should mean a serious punisment.
