By-Election result a sign of people's frustration

I am always wary of opinion polls.  The only ones that count are those where people cast their votes in real elections.  So although the predictions of a massive victory against Labour were heartening, I never believed the result until I saw it delivered in the early hours of this morning.

As David Cameron has said, the Conservatives did not secure a swing of almost 18% out of sudden love for him or our candidate, though clearly people are warming to our way of thinking and the policies we are offering.  They are sick and tired of the relentless rise in the cost of everything while wages remain stagnant.  I and my colleagues will continue to work to win people's trust and their enthusiasm for our agenda.  I would never wish to serve the people of Eltham only because people were fed up with Labour.

Brown's drowning - in a pool of his own making

Today Gordon Brown is touring the TV and radio stations and will host a press conference in Downing Street.  His message is "I'm on the side of the poor and low paid" - and says he gave an extra tenner a month to those people because the price of fuel, milk and bread is rising.  Does this man have any idea?  How far does he think a tenner will go?  And let's not forget, the emergency budget was only brought about because he inflicted a tax INCREASE on the lowest paid in the first place.

Inflation is now officially out of control; house prices are on the way down; food and fuel bills are rising faster than most people can remember; reposessions are up 17%; businesses are going to the wall...something tells me an extra tenner in your wage packet isn't going to make that much difference.

Furtehr thoughts on the latest Brown Bribe

I have never received so many calls and emails so quickly in response to any political event.  Clearly things are turning heavily against Labour and at a pace which must be scaring the life out of them.

The details of this latest bribe are becoming clearer and it is the likes of police officers, nurses and teachers who are going to feel the pain, now that the poorest in work have had some of the damage to their pay packets

repaired.

Not only are people not stupid - they can see through a cynical ploy to apease Labour MPs - they are wise to the spin.  This tax change should never have been brought in and now it is being 'fixed' it is causing further billions to be borrowed at a time when government borrowing is already out of control.  As a teacher said to me last night, a fine example to set to young people at a time when debt is causing misery to millions, many of whom can no longer afford to pay their mortgages.

10p Tax Change - yet another con to correct a previous con

Poor DarlingThe Chancellor's statement to MPs this afternoon is yet another cynical con to try to recover the loss of face brought about by the original 10p con introduced by Gordon Brown last year.

Labour MPs were delighted when the abolition of the 10p tax was announced - a tax cut was all they cared about, never mind the small print which left low paid workers worse off.  Now the Chancellor spends yet another £2 Billion 3 billion (I have re-read the figures) to correct the 'mistake' - but refuses to just scrap the whole idea!  All this to try to save their skins in the by-election in Crewe.  Doesn't it just show how desperate the people running this country have become?  Throwing our money around to bribe and pander their way to another few years in office.  It stinks.

Jimmy Mizen - R.I.P.

Jimmy MizenAnother senseless and needless death of a young innocent person on London's streets.  This time an Eltham lad.  My thoughts like those of every other decent person are with his family and friends.

What posesses someone to kill a 16 year old boy?  His dad described him as a "fine young fella".  What a waste of a young life.

This violence has to end.  I am sure the Police will do everything they can to catch the person responsible for this and when they do, I hope the full force of the criminal justice system crushes the evil piece of work.

Correction: I stated above that Jimmy Mizen was from Eltham.  In actual fact, he attended school in Eltham but lived in Lewisham. (14/5/08)

Banning booze on buses

I warmly welcome this decision and look forward to it becoming a crime to drink on public transport.  It is only a pity that Boris cannot enforce the same rule on overland trains as well as underground, DLR and trams.  It was entirely predictable that the unions would get all hot and bothered about it.  It is worth keeping in mind though that if someone refuses to leave a bus or train when requested to do so by a member of staff, the police or transport police can be called to assist.

I think the travelling public will welcome this small blow for common sense.

Boris has made a great start

The appointment of Ray Lewis as Deputy Mayor for young people with a Ray Lewisspecial responsibility to help get Black youths 'out of the court room and into the board room' is an inspired choice.  He has a proven history of helping young people who feel powerless to find a new direction and make something of themselves.

I am also delighted to see Richard Barnes appointed as the (statutory) Deputy Mayor.  He is a friend and someone whose judgement I have come to value.  I am also pleased to see Kit Malthouse has been recognised for his talents which he more than demonstrated when a Westminster councillor.  These and others who have been appointed show that not only does Boris have the vision for our city, he has the team to implement real change.

New Immigration Rules

New rules come into effect today to control access to the UK.  The points system is similar to that of Australia and on the face of it is to be welcomed.  However, the new regime does nothing to tackle the mass illegal immigration which by Ministers' own admission is not only out of control but impossible to measure.

Little has been done to enforce stronger borders and few new resources have been amde available to find those living in the UK unlawfully.  Even when they are found it seems everything is done to help them appeal and find ways of extending their stay before paying them a tidy sum to go home and set up a new business.

The government has had 11 years to grip this problem.  Suddenly they say they have the solution.  Sadly I think they're whistling in the dark.

Sour grapes from some Media

Since Boris achieved a huge victory over Ken - an achievement many thought impossible even a few months ago - I have seen some in the media trying to re-run the campaign, dragging quotes from yesteryear from the archives (usually out of context) to undermine the man who scored a 6% lead over Livingstone.

The Wright Stuff on Channel 5 is a prime example (where a Scottish presenter who doesn't even have a vote in London was 'shocked' that people could have done such a thing as vote for Boris) and the BBC which could barely spit the result out, such was the bitterness.

BBC LondonFor all those in the media who have enjoyed the last decade of laughing at the Conservatives and constantly repeating how unelectable we were, time to wake up and smell the coffee.  Not only does a Conservative Mayor run London, we have 11 GLA Members, we won nearly 300 additional council seats across England and Wales, we control more local authorities than all other major parties combined and yes, we fully intend to win the trust of people to win the next general election.
None of this happened by magic.  We have worked hard and formulated policies people find attractive.  That is why millions of people supported our candidates last week.  It's called democracy and if you find it hard to cope with I suggest you find a less challenging job.

You helped change London - Thank you!

BorisTo all those people who helped to elect Boris - thank you.  We asked you to help make a change, and you answered our call in your thousands.  A much higher voter turnout proved that people were excited about this election and cared about the result.  Boris has shown by the grace with which he accepted his victory and the generous words he used to describe Ken, that he is a mature politician, not the joke which Ken tried to portray him as.

Boris now has a massive job to do.  We all wish him luck with it.
