Happy New Year Eltham!

Happy New YearI would like to wish everyone in the Eltham area a very happy, healthy and peaceful New Year.  Let us hope that here in the UK the predicted financial meltdown can be avoided and that abroad we can look forward to peace and democracy.

I will be blogging again soon and welcome your thoughts, predictions and suggestions.

Happy Christmas Eltham!

I am taking a little time off now to enjoy the Christmas festivities with friends and family.  I wish everyone in Eltham and the surrounding areas a very happy Christmas and my best wishes to everyone for the New Year.

Do keep your comments and suggestions coming in - email me at David@DavidGold4Eltham.com

Spare a thought this Christmas

As it's Christmas, a very personal reflection from me.

The last few weeks have afforded me lots of opportunities to meet the less David Goldfortunate in our society and I hope that while many of us focus on the fun, we spare some time for those for whom Christmas will be difficult.

This year there will be many people for whom this is the first Christmas without a loved one.  I am thinking of the sons of my dear friend Sylvia, who died earlier this year after a heroic battle against cancer.  Every year her card would arrive with a balloon inside which, when inflated, read "Merry Christmas from Sylvia"!  A simple gesture which reflected her wonderful sense of fun and lack of pomposity.

Today I made my annual Christmas visit to my Mother's grave and later I will be visiting my grandparents' grave in Hove.  I still miss them, and my mother especially, and Christmas is always a time when the loss is felt all the more.

There will be many more who suffer pain of a physical nature; those who are cold and unable to afford adequate heating or even clothing; others who do not even have somewhere to call home.  I hope that everyone will take the opportunity this week to stop for a moment, and forget whatever is troubling them, and spare a thought for others who are less fortunate.  And, if you can spare some loose change - or even have some room left on a credit card - please consider the many wonderful charities locally and nationally which could do with your support.

I wish you all a very happy Christmas.  If you are sharing the time with family and friends, treasure those moments, however challenging they may be (!) and try to make the most of the opportunity.  I hope the new year brings us all peace, happiness and good health.

Best wishes.

David

So much going on....and Christmas is rushing towards us!

I do enjoy the pre-Christmas period, though it is of course ridiculously busy.  As a result, the blog ahs not been updated as often as I would have liked.

I had the pleasure of visiting the Gordon School the other day to meet the Head and tour the facilities.  I was impressed with the emphasis on Excellence.

Spice GirlsYesterday I was at the Eltham farmers' market which seemed to be as popular as ever and enjoyed the mince pies and cheese I bought from stalls.  After a lunch with friends it was off to the O2 to see the Spice Girls (yes, tragic, but as we had seats in the 5th row from the stage I defy anyone not to have been swept along with Spice mania!).

Today is my last day at the office before getting down to the serious business of finishing off the cards and preparing for our traditional open house for the family and a few close friends.  I can't wait!

Busy weekend

Christmas has certainly arrived - and it was a busy time this weekend as I had commitments across the constituency and beyond.  Highlights included the Christmas fete at Minnie Bennett House in Shooters Hill Road.  The residents and volunteers there were great fun and I was inspired by the dedication of the Manager who should be a role model for others.

I was also pleased to do my little bit for Demelza House - I bought two bricks towards the building of the new hospice in Eltham.  At a fiver a brick it's a modest contribution but was appreciated by the lovely lady who took my cash!

Conservatives collect petition for Red Lion Lane

This weekend I joined the Chairman of Shooters Hill Ward CPetition launch in Red Lion Laneonservatives, Phil Hendren, and Council Group Leader Spencer Drury to launch a petition in Red Lion Lane requesting that the Council introduce one way traffic along the northern part of the road. Two weeks ago I sought Shooters Hill residents’ views on issues that concerned them and alongside crime, education and the changing regime for bin collection, the residents of Red Lion Lane mentioned that there were regular confrontations due to congestion along their road.  We promised to respond to this situation and collect a petition which could be presented at Council.

The petition was widely welcomed and several other issues also arose as a result of the additional conversations we had with residents. The Shooters Hill Conservative team will pick up on those issues in due course.

Christmas should mean Nativity plays - not Winterval nonsense

NativityI am disgusted that only a fifth of schools are likely to perform a Nativity play.  In case anyone was in doubt - and clearly a lot of people are - this is a Christian country and Christmas is the most important festival in our calendar (yes, in spite of my name, I am a practising Christian).

Putting a tea towel on your head to pretend to be a shepherd or a crown to be a wise man or wings to be an angel are all a part of growing up.  It is reported that many schools have opted for a secular celebration to avoid offending those of non-Christian faiths.

In this country people bend over backwards to respect Muslims, Hindus, Jews, and every other type of religion, yet we almost apologise for being Christian.  Enough!  I fully respect everyone's right to celebrate whatever festivals or faith they choose - or to have no faith at all.  But let that fairness and respect play to all beliefs, not just the visible minorities.
Every non-Christian I have spoken to agrees with this and would wish their children to be a part of the celebration of Christmas at school.  The PC brigade can play at petty politics elsewhere, they should not ruin Christmas for the rest of us.

Christmas cheer at Boris' Celebration

The Tories are Back!  That's what the invitation from Boris, the ConservativeBacking Boris Mayoral candidate for London, said.  That may well be true, but it was also a clue to the venue for his Christmas party, which was held at the Star Wars exhibition on the South Bank.

The truth is I have never been a fan of Star Wars and could probably only name a few of the main characters.  But I went along because Boris deserves support for his campaign to represent all parts of London, not just those known to tourists and within walking distance of his office.  And because I was one of the first parliamentary candidates in London to back him, shortly after he declared himself a candidate.

The GLA and Mayoral campaigns will be hard fought and with Ken in a tight spot, it may get nasty.  But for now, let's enjoy the Christmas festivities and enjoy the peace while it lasts.
