Scrap Inheritance Tax

I dislike inheritance tax and believe it should be abolished.  It used to be a tax on the super-rich and only affected a few people in the millionaires' club.  Inheritance TaxThese days it's just as likely to affect the couple who bought their council house when the kids were young and have since retired.  In London, where property prices have escalated massively in recent years, this is a real problem.

Inheritance Tax is a tax on money left after tax had already been taken.  It is disgraceful to tax those who have worked hard, saved hard or invested and been responsible.  Handing something on to our children is what many dream of.  How dare the government force people to sell the family home to fund benefits for the workshy.

Give GPs greater freedom

I am in favour of giving GPs greater freedom to provide out of hours medical care, as proposed by the Conservatives today.

Freedom for GPsCurrently, it is almost as though you need to be ill by appointment, as primary care trusts have run up huge defecits and can't afford to pay for out of hours cover.  Patients should be able to register with a GP close to work or at home, should see a doctor at the weekend if they need to and should not have to feel they need to make a choice between struggling to work or risk suspicion from their boss they are 'pulling a sicky".

A more simplified system would help patients and giving GPs more opportunity to serve their patients' needs should surely be welcoemd by them.

Crime, Crime, Crime

I attended a police surgery last night.  I prefer not to Police do their bestmention where it was because the specific issues raised could be subject to future court proceedings.  It's depressing to hear of decent hard working people and their elderly retired neighbours having to barricade themselves in at night in fear.

Among the highlights of that meeting and others I have recently attended in the constituency:

- A couple who had dog's mess smeared across their front door

- Drug dealing on the green opposite family homes

- Uprooting of plants and trees from communal and family gardens

- Used needles dumped in people's gardens and in children's play areas

- Scooters driven across parks terrorising dog walkers and families with childrenDrug dealing in residential areas

The police round here do the best they can with very limited resources.  Wouldn't it make a difference if we had more visible policing, greater numbers of local police officers, less paperwork when they catch criminals and better discipline in schools?  I have met many local police and they seem totally dedicated but possibly weary with the complexities of the Human Rights Act, bureaucracy and budget cuts.  Give them the tools and I bet they'd have this area cleaned up.

Poor Clive...

Time FM

Just heard the local Labour MP on Time FM, our local radio station.  He's calling on Gordon Brown not to call a snap election because he doesn't think the party is ready yet - but I think he meant that he's not ready yet.  Then there was the usual rant about how anyone could support David Cameron was beyond him.....as predictable as it was preachy.

Talking to residents in Coldharbour and commuters at Mottingham about their experiences of crime in recent weeks I'd say he's right to be worried about his future.

Want evidence of the police state?

Thanks to Guido for this fantastic proof of just how manipulated our poliNo thoughts allowedce are these days.  This is how a peaceful political protest was erased not by the thought police of Burma, but by Bournemouth police during Labour Party conference.  Still believe Gordon Brown wants a big tent approach to government?

Burma should be of concern to us all

Burmese democracy demonstrationThe latest news from Burma is deeply disturbing.  I welcome the statements from President George Bush but sadly he no longer commands the respect or awe that US Presidents are used to.  Perhaps if he did, Russia and China could have been persuaded to take a different approach at the United Nations.

Please keep those courageous Burmese people in your thoughts and hope that more violence can be avoided.  It is especially important to do so when the media so casually stokes the speculation of a snap election in the UK which, if it takes place, will barely attract the attention of half the electorate, maybe fewer in the current cold weather.  Democracy is so difficult to secure but easily taken for granted by those of us who are used to it.

Boris for all of London

 Boris for London

I am delighted that the Conservative candidate for Mayor of London, is Boris Johnson, the man I backed from the start.  He won with an almighty 79% of the vote and I believe he will be an outstanding Mayor of London.

Boris has visited all 32 London boroughs in recent weeks including Greenwich, and has pledged to represent and support all parts of the capital, not just the areas where he feels comfortable or where his pet causes are most welcome.  What a change that would be from the current Mayor!

As Boris has said himself:

"The job of the Mayor is simple - to get people to work on time, to ensure people feel safe on the streets, to help people find a place to call home, to celebrate our diversity and to champion our success".  I'd go along with that.

It's not criminal to drive a car - even in Greenwich

The issue of Greenwich's propsoed congestion tax will not go away.  Sadly, the tidal flow in the Blackwall Tunnel won't come back if Transport for London has its way.Blackwall Tunnel

I am campaigning to return the system which worked for so long to the Blackwall Tunnel and was removed without notice or consultation.

I am deeply opposed to a congestion charge for Greenwich.

For more details on both these issues please take a look at the Association of British Drivers website which has run an excellent campaign on both these issues.  It's not criminal to drive a car though if you live in Greenwich you feel like one.

Self-defence should not be a crime

Jack StrawThe Justice Secretary will announce today that it will no longer automatically be an offence to strike out in self-defence.  And about time too after the many cases of people being put through a trial for safeguarding their property and loved ones. But what happened to change their minds?  As Home Secretary Charles Clarke conducted a review 3 years ago and decided nothing need be done.

Of course the timing is entirely cynical, designed to catch the end of Labour conference media coverage, and it has taken a decade for the Government to come to its senses on this - after all, people have campaigned for a change in the law to be told repeatedly it could not be done.

So subject to the detail I welcome the announcement but suspect that as so often in the past, yet more legislation will actually complicate matters even more and lead to even greater uncertainty.

National recognition for this website!

I am delighted to learn that this very website has been named in the top 100 right of centre blogs by a panel of blogging experts.  Number 75 is a very reasonable result in my opinion in view of the many contenders out there, many of which are far more broadly focussed than mine, which is largely about life in Eltham.

So thanks to the panel of 12 and if you fancy seeing the complete list, and many more besides, the list features in a  new book entitled The GUIDE TO POLITICAL BLOGGING 2007.
